Introduction
Pirates are ships that don't have transponders, and will usually attack you on sight. If they blow up, you can recover an escape pod and turn it in for money. However, you should instead attempt to recover the ships themselves. They can be sold or patched up for use yourself.

Required Equipment
The manipulator arm is the best way to recover enemy ships. A TNTRL is capable of recovering pirate ships, but ships with diagonal forward RCS are a lot better. These include the KTA24 or the Vulture Prospector. For weapons, any mass driver will do, with the railgun being the best, and also a microwave gun.

Events that Summon Pirates
The most common event that summons pirates is an NPC approaching you to warn you about either ships without transponders, or ships with leaking reactors. If you respond that you are here for a combat patrol, or that you have seen ships with no transponders, it will summon some pirates to fight.

Other events that can summon pirates are a ship fighting a pirate, or just a lone pirate coming to ransom you.

The amount of money in your bank account influences what sort of pirates appear. A 4 million bank balance spawns much more valuable pirates than a zero bank balance.

How to Disable Pirates for Recovery
Now comes the fun part. When you get a pirate in your sights, turn off your manipulator and railgun and start microwaving them. Keep the microwave trained on the enemy ship and they should start drifting. When the back of the ship comes into view, turn on the railgun for a second and try to punch a hole in the reactor. It is easy to over do it with the railgun! You want to inflict only 1 reactor hole. When the enemy ship has one orange plume coming out of it, stop using the railgun, but keep them microwaved.

After less than a minute the enemy ship should run out of fuel and the lights will go out. If you shoot them too much they will go critical instead. Once they have gone dark, recover them with the manipulator arm.

If your ship doesn't have diagonal RCS, you will probably want to turn off your forward thrusters. Just grab the disabled ship and bring it home to the Enceladus.

If you are having troubles keeping a hold on the disabled ships, see Beginner's Guide to Derelicts.

This baseline reconnaissance craft follows your ship and delivers a video feed of the surrounding area of the ring.

With the lack of additional hardware installed, the camera on this vehicle is equipped with a larger, wide-angle lens, allowing greater viewing distance than any other reconnaissance vehicle. -In-Game Description
The basic recon craft, while the Obonto USV-R does not have any special capabilities or sensors, it is capable of zooming out further, providing a wider field of view. This is a solid choice for any situation, enabling the pilot to spot valuables or react to threats from further away then otherwise possible.

This reconnaissance drone, equipped with a remote laser interferometer, is capable of detecting and mapping slight gravitational distortions within the rings.

The data is presented in a manner similar to a topographical map, with high gravitational disturbances (represented in hotter colors) signifying greater mass in the region. This may signify abundant mineral deposits if the visible ice mass does not reflect the readings. -In-Game Description
The USV maps gravitational distortions, and overlays the LIDAR with them. This information can be used to quickly estimate where mineral-rich locations are by comparing with visual ice density.

The Gravimetric Drone overlays information on the LIDAR. Some HUDs use different colors, but on the TNTL HUD, green lines indicate a change in asteroid density, with the red highlighting showing the direction. Asteroids in higher density areas will drop ore chunks of greater mass.

This drone, equipped with a microseismic scanner, uses an array of low-powered lasers to induce and observe microseismic shockwaves in asteroids. The results show the trace minerals present in surface ice, and aid geologists in quickly judging their content and value. -In-Game Description
The USV-D acts similarly to the cargo bay scanners, displaying the rough composition of items on a new HUD display. To scan an object, either select it with the AP or hover your mouse over it. Objects that are being scanned can be identified by geologists faster.
Obonto USV-GOT
This recon drone, equipped with optical targeting computer interface, provides the ability to manually add objects to a queue, which will direct the autonomous systems. A drone system will still operate autonomously, but will ignore targets not within priority queue defined by operator, and ignore range restrictions to reach targeted objects. -In-Game Description
A recon craft designed to be used with drones, the USV-GOT enables the use of a priority queue that overrides geologist filters and tuning restrictions. Right-clicking on any applicable object will add it to the queue, and right clicking again will remove it. Objects in the queue are prioritized by nanodrones, NT mining companions, and the EIAA-1337 autopilot.
The HAL9000 Hud is yellow, and has monitors that bounce and cast reflections as you crash into things, which is neat. Cargo on the bottom left, a small LIDAR on the top right, and all the normal information divided between top and bottom. Its nice that the right edge of the screen is half empty, because that's where you are are going to be looking most of the time.
The K37 TNTRL Hud is green, and the standard hud for the K37. It boasts the largest useful LIDAR display in the top left, cargo in the bottom left, and normal information screens in the top right. This is a very good hud due to the large LIDAR screen and lack of distracting effects. The bottom right fuel gauge always shows a K37, regardless of what ship you are using, but its sort of a useless readout anyway.
Don't use this. use the metric mod.

Eagle Prospector Metric
The Eagle Prospector Metric Hud takes all the information and mashes it into one big bottom bar. The LIDAR isn't as big as on the K37, but its a very clean hud with lots of space on the edges for you to see where you are going. The cargo display in the center always displays an eagle prospector regardless of what ship you are using, but it alters the cargo bay shape to be accurate, so its not too big of a deal.

Model E
The Elon Interstellar Model E Hud is the standard hud for the Model E, and is the absolute worst thing ever created. Its so flashy, so shiny, so futuristic and modern, that its impossible to use in any meaningful way. Hud parts appear in hexagons when they change, and then fade out so you forget they changed. oh and the LIDAR map is overlayed on the entire screen, with the edges (the only important part) being off screen unless you scroll over there. if you hate LIDAR, and love shiny useless stuff, this is the hud for you!

Bald Eagle
The Bald Eagle Racing Hud is unlocked by talking to a racer and asking where to buy stuff. Its a very sparse hud, with only critical information displayed. Top left is speed, acceleration and fuel. Top right is electrical and reactor temp. Across the top of the screen is a green line for capacitor and a red line for reactor temp. a small LIDAR is in the bottom right, and some of this info is repeated in a box at the bottom. the information NOT displayed is cargo hold (which you can still check on the geology tab), and what components are on or off or damaged (which you can still check in the mechanics tab). This is the best hud.

K37s start with RA-K37 thrusters, coming in at a usable 200kN thrust. The RA-K44 thrusters are a good cheap upgrade, but 'excessive wear' matters and they break down a lot faster. It might be better to 'downgrade' to one of the less efficient higher power systems (NDVTT or NDSTR). It takes a lot of fuel rods to begin handling the upper range systems, but once you get there, the MA350HO is a great system so long as you don't need gimbles. You need gimbles if your thrusters are melting things you are trying to pick up with your manipulator arm.
The microwave emitter can sort of break rocks, and is excellent for disrupting other ships while you fill them full of holes with your railgun. The CL-150 is the most weapony of these guns, but its about half the damage of the starting mass driver. The mining lasers ARE, however, very good at shooting rocks. i'd choose the CL-200AP for rock shooting purposes due to the gimbal.
